Cruising is a performance for one performer and one sound artist. The performer moves continuously for the duration of the piece, responding to a set of improvisational tasks involving only the lower part of the body. The rhythm of the piece becomes increasingly elaborate as time passes, while the sounds produced by the performer’s movements are processed live by the sound artist, creating a hypnotic crescendo of both sonic and visual materials. Cruising emerged from research on minimalism, rhythm, and on patterns found in various dance techniques. The piece is an invitation to the public to let go of (the search for) meaning and instead take refuge in a hypnotic exploration of time and space. The persistence and subtle evolution of physical, spatial, and sonic patterns over time demands of both the audience and the performer to sink into a quasi-trance, allowing the unmanifested internal world to gently reveal itself.
